Step 1
The pick and roll (sometimes also referred to as a screen and roll) is an offensive play designed for a player to set a pick (screen) for a teammate that is handling the ball and then slip behind the defense, or roll, to accept a pass on the way to the basket.
-
Step 2
The pick and roll is usually used with small, quick guards handling the ball and taller, more powerful inside players (forwards and centers) setting the screens and rolling to the hoop. This can create good match-ups for the offensive team, because the taller defender is forced to switch defensive assignments and guard the much quicker ball handler, while the smaller defender must now stop the rolling offensive big man.
-
Step 3
The play begins with a ball handler moving toward a teammate with a defender in tight pursuit. The teammate then sets a pick by standing in the path of the defender, freeing his ball handler. This forces the defender to quickly choose whether to chase after the ball handler or guard the teammate right next to him setting the pick.
-
Step 4
If the defender in question decides to pursue the sprung ball handler, the offensive player that set the pick can simply spin (roll) toward the basket, where he can expect a pass and a possibly easy shot. Should the defender decide instead to stay with the screening teammate, the ball handler should have an open shot.
