Step 1
Release any judgments that you may have about autism. Don’t look at it as something bad. Instead see it as something that simply is. This will free you from the urge to resist the situation. Resistance only causes pain.
-
Step 2
Accept the circumstances as they are. Don’t blame yourself or anyone else for your child’s condition. Embrace the situation. Your child will be able to sense your acceptance and will feel free to be him or herself without feeling pressure to change.
-
Step 3
Understand that this experience is a journey and although there will be major challenges, there will be many blessings along the way.
-
Step 4
Don’t get attached to results. Decide that your child is magnificent just the way he or she is. It’s okay to try to help your child progress but don’t put all your hopes into your child’s ability to advance. Otherwise you can set yourself and your child up for major disappointments. Just love and help your child, enjoy the journey and the result will take care of itself. What you resist persists. If you embrace the experience, you open the door for true healing.
