There are many ways to inspire passion for reading. It can be difficult to get some kids to get excited about reading on their own. However, with a little creativity and planning, as well as setting a good example, reading caterpillars will become reading butterflies.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Set the example by letting your child catch you reading. Do this as often as possible so that they can see how important reading is to you and that you enjoy it.

  2. Step 2

Select your favorite book from your childhood to read together. Set the scene by gathering any stuffed animals or items you can relate to the book. You could even dress like your favorite character.

  3. Step 3

Read the book with your little one. Make sure to be excited to read it again.

  4. Step 4

Do an activity that is relative to the story. This can be as simple as drawing a picture about what happened in the book to writing an alternate ending. One of the best ways to relive the tale you've told is by acting it out.

  5. Step 5

Now that you have shared your favorite book, agree to make reading your child's favorite book as much fun. If they do not have a favorite, discuss what your child likes and either buy books on this topic or make a field trip to the library to get books on their desired subject.

  6. Step 6

Make sure to have a supply of books your child wants to read ready and available at all times. With enough encouragement and involvement you will develop a child who loves to read.
