When you are editing in Adobe Premiere Pro you may have a clip where you will want to adjust the cut between two clips, and use variations of simple trimming known as rolling edits. By using this tool, you can make adjustments in a one action that would otherwise require many steps to accomplish. A “rolling edit” trims adjacent Out points and In points simultaneously, by the same number of frames. This will move the edit point between clips while preserving other clips’ positions in time, and maintain the total duration of the sequence. There are several ways to perform a rolling edit.

From Quick Guide: Video Editing Software 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First open the trim monitor, and click on the “Trim” button at the bottom right corner of your program monitor. The monitor will open in a pop-up window.

  2. Step 2

Move your mouse point in between the video images so that it changes into the rolling edit tool. It looks like double horizontal lines with an arrow pointing outward on each end of the two lines. Drag left or right.

  3. Step 3

Another way to do a rolling edit is to drag the center timecode display left or right.

  4. Step 4

You may also click the timecode display between the two views, and type a valid timecode number. This will trim the edges of both clips to that frame. Press "Enter" when finished.

  5. Step 5

Select the boxed number above the center jog disk, and type a negative number to trim both clips to the left or type a positive number to trim both clips to the right. Press "Enter" when finished.
