Wakame is an edible brown seaweed native to Asia. You can find wakame in Asian food markets and gourmet or specialty grocery stores. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Fresh or dried wakame seaweed
  • Two large pots
  • Water
  • Tongs

Instructions

    • 1

      Bring a large pot of water to boil. Once it has boiled, turn the heat down so the water is simmering. Separately, fill another pot with cold water.

      Dip the wakame seaweed in the simmering water until it turns green. This will happen very quickly, so make sure to pay attention.

      Remove the seaweed from the hot water and dip it in the pot with the cold water with the tongs.

      Remove the wet seaweed from cold water. If you want to cut it, you will have to let it cool just a bit.

      Serve your delicious wakame seaweed over rice with salt or soy sauce.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are going to gather the seaweed yourself, make sure you go with an experienced person or take a detailed description or photos of what you are looking for, as there are many types of edible seaweed. Once you have gathered it, you will need to allow it to dry by hanging it outside before cooking it.

  • Do not eat anything that you are not sure is an edible seaweed.
