Some sports statistics are difficult to parse because players do not play the same amount of minutes and games. In addition the role of luck is not apparent when looking only at a box score. Bloops fall in for hits, hard hit balls occasionally are hit right at defenders. By calculating a hitter's fly ball percentage, you can gauge how often they hit the ball in the air. When calculated as fly ball hits allowed for a pitcher, you can determine how often a pitcher allows hitters to hit the ball in the air.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Baseball statistics
  • Calculator

Step1
Add up a hitter's total number of fly balls, or for a pitcher, his total number of fly balls allowed.
Step2
Add up the hitter's line drives plus ground balls plus fly balls, or for a pitcher his line drives allowed plus ground balls allowed plus fly balls allowed.
Step3
Divide the result of step one by the result in Step 2.
