Sometimes an in depth study can be intimidating. As Christians we often read the bible, but do not take the time to study it or meditate on it in depth. The primary reason is that we do not know how. Here is a guide, whom anyone can easily use, to help you through the process. Your knowledge of God’s word will be greatly increased through this process.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bible
  • Concordance (optional)
  • Paper and pen or a computer

Step1
Choose an epistle. Pray for God to reveal His wisdom and his will to you through His word. Read the epistle from front to back.
Step2
Return to the beginning. Choose a section or paragraph to study and read it a few more times. If possible, read it in several of the major translations. Regardless of how large or small the section is, make sure to study it all, beginning to end. (All scripture is God breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking and training in righteousness.)
Step3
Set up a spreadsheet, either on paper or on the computer. Enter the questions in the below steps into the top of the columns as headings for the spreadsheet, in addition to a column labeled "verses you are studying." Start a new row for each set of verses.
Step4
How do these verses relate to God’s people? Take a look at what they mean to Christians as a whole. What does it say about the plan of God for his chosen people (ex. Phil 3:14). If applicable, what does this have to say about the Israelite nation?
Step5
What do these verses tell us about Jesus Christ and his life, death and resurrection? Specifically, how does this relate to your salvation or to the ministry of Jesus while on earth? This can include anything referenced in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) or Acts referring specifically to Christ or prophesy of Christ.
Step6
What life application can you derive from these verses? What do they mean for you today? Many people skip this step, but it is the most important. What good is God’s wisdom if we do not know how to use it?
Step7
What Old Testament references are made in these verses and how do they apply to the topic of this section? Everything in the New Testament has some relation to the Old Testament. Sometimes it is difficult to locate this information. Feel free to use commentary or internet resources in the process, but use them sparingly and with good judgment. Challenge the credentials of the literature you are using. If you cannot decide whether to use something, be safe and do not use it. A good concordance should help you find an Old Testament Reference. It just may take time.
Step8
Other Information. You will find yourself using this column frequently for miscellaneous thoughts regarding the scripture, however don’t feel obligated unless there is additional information that was not covered under the other headings. This is a good place to list parallel passages which may give further insight into the reading.
Step9
Before beginning tomorrow's study, read through the day prior's study to refresh your memory.
