Step 1
Arrive by air. Kaohsiung is serviced by one of Taiwan’s two international airports with daily flights to a wide variety of Asian destinations and beyond. The airport is an easy taxi or public bus ride away from the downtown core.
-
Step 2
Arrive by train. Both standard and high speed rail service exists around Taiwan. It is possible to travel from Taipei to Kaohsiung in 90 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at the station or reserved online.
-
Step 3
Choose from a wide variety of hotels. Kaohsiung is a major metropolis but still manages to retain lodging selections for a wide range of budgets. Upon arrival at either the airport or train station, the visitors’ counter can help you select from some of the more upscale hotels. For the budget-conscious, look around the train station where many low-cost hotels have been operating for years.
-
Step 4
Choose your mode of transportation. Kaohsiung is large enough that travel to spots of interest will require a form of getting around other than your feet. Scooters and cars can be rented around the train station if you possess a valid international driver’s license. Taxis are quite cheap by Western standards. For those seeking a bit of adventure, the city buses are cheap and their routes are extensive, but some Mandarin language ability will probably be required to speak with the drivers.

Step 5
Start the fun! Kaohsiung offers a wide range of sights and activities including hiking, short harbor cruises, restaurants with local and international fare, historical sites and nightlife. You are only limited by your time and imagination.
