Hong Kong is an exciting, vibrant destination. But without taking care, Hong Kong can be very expensive. When you travel to Hong Kong, get the most bang out of your buck in one of Asia’s most fascinating cities.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Watch what you eat. Hong Kong is known for its gastronomic delights and a person passionate about food could spend months exploring the city. Trendy restaurants in Hong Kong offer world-class food but at world-class prices.

Most of the city’s residents stick to the smaller restaurants where food is served up quickly and deliciously. Fortunately for non-Cantonese speakers, pictures of the dishes are often on hand. Don’t forget to swing by a night market, if possible.

  2. Step 2

Watch where you sleep. Do your research before you go and try never to arrive on a weekend. The closer you stay to downtown, the harder your wallet will be hit. Before leaving home, see if you can hold of the many flight with hotel packages that many tour groups offer.

  3. Step 3

Consider your transport options. While taxis in Hong Kong are not prohibitively expensive, the city’s excellent public transportation system is efficient and cheap. Hop on a bus or the MTR (Mass Transit Railroad) whenever possible. Hong Kong is also home to the useful “Octobus Card," a prepaid card that can be used on all forms of public transportation.

  4. Step 4

Keep your shopping away from the malls and towards the markets but don’t forget to bargain. Hong Kong residents have been trading goods for a long time and know how to cut a deal.

  5. Step 5

Entertainment venues in Hong Kong can melt your credit card. For fun, why not take a tour of the city on a low-cost double decker bus? People watching at the city’s outdoor markets is free, as is taking a stroll near the harbor.
