How to Study Bowling in Your Classroom

Let's Bowl!

What better way to teach kids their math facts up to 10 than to study bowling? Kids love bowling and it's not that hard to build a mini bowling alley in your classroom. The kids will be truly motivated to learn their math facts and you can also incorporate some really great word-building exercises, as well as art concepts such as shading. Here are some ways to do it.

Instructions

    • 1

Build a bowling alley in class. The ball return can be comprised of just two pieces of PBC piping sitting on a chair (see my article "How to Build a Bowling Alley in Your Classroom" for more information).

    • 2

Teach the kids how to be a "Pin Monkey." Resetting pins is a great fine motor exercise.

    • 3

Have the kids use magnets (much faster than writing) to keep their score. This is where they learn math facts.

    • 4

Teach the kids to play the word-building game using magnetic letters.

    • 5

Have the kids build words using homemade paper bowling pins.

    • 6

Teach the kids shading by having them shade bowling pins to look three-dimensional.

    • 7

Create cutting exercises for the students to do.

    • 8

Get the kids some bowling shirts. You can either buy Catholic School uniforms, dye them and add iron-ons or simply purchase bowling shirts on the Internet.
