Step 1
Cook together. Whether you have a family of two, four, six, or more, take turns cooking and always cook in pairs. A good amount of bonding and getting to know each other will occur while in the kitchen getting the dinner ready for the rest of the family.
-
Step 2
Cook for each other. Plan a night during which you want to prepare the entire dinner for the rest of your family. Make it a special meal, maybe a family favorite or something new that no one has tried before. If you make it a big deal, the others will get excited as well.
-
Step 3
Specify a time that works for everyone. After comparing busy schedules, try to find a time that is convenient for every member of your family. No one will feel left out and it will give everyone a break from the busy activities surrounding this special time each day.
-
Step 4
Avoid putting restrictions on the dinner hour. If someone needs to miss it one night, don’t make him feel bad. Sometimes life gets in the way and we should all understand that. If it happens on a continual basis, ask him why he hasn’t been eating dinner with the family. As soon as it becomes a required event, people will resent its necessity.
-
Step 5
Tell highs and lows of everyone’s day. A good conversation instigator, this will also allow the family to vent about frustrations or to share any particularly exciting news.
-
Step 6
Strive to talk during dinner instead of watching TV or movies. Of course, a special movie night is a great idea, but watching TV every night will obviously hinder conversation.
-
Step 7
Invite close friends to dinner and expand the family. By including friends, everyone will be more willing to stay at home to eat and the entire family will get to know extended pieces of their lives.
