From a very early age, children can learn the meanings of words and language. It is a parent’s responsibility to teach her children what words mean, and certain words, including the word "no," may help to make her life a little bit easier. Teaching a child the meaning of the word "no" requires strict dedication and constant instruction. With repetition and stern but loving lessons, a child can learn the meaning of the word "no," along with many other words, over time. Most parents will understand their children enough to recognize when they finally grasp the meaning.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Utilize the word "no" with a physical action--not physical pain--to reinforce that the current action is inappropriate. If your baby has started pinching you, firmly remove his hand from your skin and place it firmly by his side or in his lap while stressing the word "no." Even a light tap on the hand can do the trick if used continuously over time so your baby understands that the action and the word are connected.

  2. Step 2

Shake your head from side-to-side when using the word "no." Over time, your baby will learn to recognize the two in conjunction with each other and will understand that shaking your head is another way of saying that an action is unacceptable or not allowed.

  3. Step 3

Use facial expressions to emphasize your intended meaning. When you tell your baby "no," let him see on your face that you are not happy with her actions at present. Babies are quite capable of detecting emotion in their parents’ faces.

  4. Step 4

Use vocal intonation to emphasize your intended meaning. When you use the word "no," utilize a deeper, more serious tone of voice. Babies are also quite adept at reading tone, especially from their parents or caretakers.

  5. Step 5

Show your baby that the word "no" applies also to other siblings or pets within the home. If your pet misbehaves, correct him using the word "no," shaking your head from side-to-side, and punishing him in your usual manner. Your baby takes in much of what goes on around him and will begin to understand the meaning of your actions with siblings, pets, and even each other.
