How to Look Up Information at the Library

I hope you didn’t just ask “What’s a library?” Despite the information explosion that is the Internet, libraries are still powerful sources of information. Many publications do not have an Internet presence and can only be accessed through costly subscriptions or by visiting the library. Remember, libraries are paid for by your tax dollars, so use them!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Talk with the librarian. Most librarians have undergone extensive schooling and are skilled at searching for information. A librarian might be able to tell you that your subject will be best research with one particular method.
Step2
Search for books. Most libraries have several computer terminals. You may search by title, author, subject or keyword. Although your particular library may not have the book you are looking for, it is probable that you could order the book from another branch.
Step3
Search for articles. Many libraries have extensive online databases which will allow you to search through thousands upon thousands of article from around the world. This is a potentially rich resource if you are looking for professional information.
Step4
Don’t forget academic journals and trade magazines. Unlike your local newsstand, a library will subscribe to publications that are less consumer-oriented, and more information-oriented. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, ask a librarian to see if a journal or magazine could be ordered from another branch.
Step5
Have a look at microfiche. Although we have entered the digital age, conversion of microfiche documents to digital files is expensive; many libraries still have vast archives of material available to their patrons.
