Yoga is the ultimate workout--great for the mind, body and spirit. And you don’t need to trek to a gym to get the full benefits; you can set up your own yoga studio in the comfort of your own home with a few basic tools and some clear space.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A yoga mat
  • A clear, flat area at least 6-by-6 feet
  • Access to a television or a full-length mirror
  • A towel
  • Water
  • An exercise band and yoga blocks
  1. Step 1

Find a completely flat space in your home (preferably on a hardwood or tile floor) where you will have room to stretch out completely in all directions.

  2. Step 2

Clear away all clutter and anything that will distract you from your yoga practice. You need to be able to focus completely.

  3. Step 3

    Purchase a yoga mat.

  4. Step 4

Set up a full-length mirror within direct view of where you will be practicing, particularly if you are a beginner, to ensure you are doing the poses properly. If you don’t have one, take a course at a professional studio first to get the proper alignment.

  5. Step 5

If you decide you want to practice by following a DVD, make sure you have a TV set up in a place easy for you to see from where you practice. It is very easy to injure yourself by twisting to see a TV screen, so you want to place the TV in a place that’s comfortable to see.

  6. Step 6

Control the temperature in your yoga area--you want a comfortable temperature for maximum flexibility and to keep your muscles warm, ideally 75 to 85 degrees F.

  7. Step 7

If possible, set up your area near a window to allow for natural light.

  8. Step 8

Always keep a towel and water nearby, as you need to keep yourself hydrated during your workout, and will want something to wipe the sweat from your hands so you don’t slip on the mat.

  9. Step 9

If possible, have soothing instrumental music playing as you go through your routine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Depending on your fitness level and yoga knowledge, consider adding blocks and exercise bands into your routine.
  • If you are new to yoga, look into classes before setting up your own studio. To practice effectively, you need to be able to physically do the poses, and without proper technique, you could injure yourself.
