How to Tie a Racehorse’s Tongue

Racehorses occasionally need their tongues tied down to help them breath or to keep them from flipping their tongues over the bits. Knee-highs or a stretchy strip of material the length of your forearm are what is used to keep the tongue from interfering. Most horses do not mind having their tongues tied because it should be a painless fix.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wrap the material as if you were going to tie it into a knot but leave enough room so that your hand can fit in the circle of the material.

  2. Step 2

Pull out your horse’s tongue and slip it through the circle of the material.

  3. Step 3

Set the tie in the middle of tongue and then bring both ends under the horse’s chin.

  4. Step 4

Tie the ends firmly in a bow-tie under the horse’s chin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not tighten the material across the tongue of the horse, just make it snug. Only tighten up under the chin.
