Everyone has a different method to keeping their horse’s tail well maintained and manageable. Some people suggest tail bags, others tell you to never brush their tail until you have to and then other believe to brush the tail everyday with the help of conditioners. There is not one way or the other that is proven to be the best. A lot of professional horsemen are starting to use fake tails. Fake tails attach inconspicuously underneath the original tail to give the appearance of a full, long tail. Keeping a nice tail though always helps with the overall appearance of your horse.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a leave-in spray conditioner that you think works well.

  2. Step 2

Spray in the conditioner and leave it in for around 5 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Use a human hair brush to brush your horse’s tail.

  4. Step 4

Start from the bottom, holding the tail above where you are brushing, and work your way up the horse’s tail. Do not yank or pull at knots, but instead use more conditioner and slowly work through the knots.

  5. Step 5

Braid your horse’s tail once you have completely brushed out all of the knots. You can cover the tail with a tail bag if you choose. If you do decide to cover the tail be sure that you take the tail bag off on a regular basis and do not store the tail wet.

  6. Step 6

Brush your horse’s tail daily and wash your horse’s tail every couple of weeks, always conditioning the hair.
