How to Inspire Your Child to Find a Hobby

Kids these days are either playing video games or getting in trouble. If forced inside without access to a computer, they will be bored. No one puts them on the road to finding a passion. Everyone needs a hobby. It doesn't matter if it is postcards or gardening, there needs to be something. A kid caught up in a hobby will have less time for getting in trouble. It doesn’t matter what the age or gender, work with your child until they have a passion for something besides video games.

1. Go to indianchild.com for a list of hobbies for kids (see Resources below).
2. Try stamp collecting. If he hasn’t ever paid attention to stamps, now is the time to explain how stamps change over the years. Find places online that talk about stamps and get background information. Find out if there is a stamp club in the area. If not, start one. The potential of this passion is that stamp collecting can last a lifetime and turn out to be very profitable. There isn’t a kid who doesn’t like the idea of earning money.
3. This will even be a better activity if it is something you and your child can do together. You will grow closer and have a similar passion. Don’t force the choice--simply open the door to options. Don’t leave it up to the child to follow through.
4. Find a way to showcase the results of the hobby, whether it is a great stamp collection or hand-made crafts. Create your own family’s way to reward an effort well done. You might even convince your local newspaper to have an article about children and their hobbies. Creativity is the key to this success. Something that has, unfortunately, gone out the window because of our busy schedules.
