Save money by making your own easy to use laundry soap.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5 gallon bucket with lid
  • One bar of your favorite soap, grated
  • 1 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
  • Essential oil (optional)
  1. Step 1

    1. Grate one whole bar of your favorite bath soap.

  2. Step 2

    2. Put grated soap into a medium sized sauce pan, and add enough water to just cover soap. Over medium heat, melt soap flakes, stirring until completely dissolved.

  3. Step 3

    3. Fill a 5 gallon bucket about 3/4 of the way full with warm water. Add melted soap mixture to the bucket and stir until well mixed.

  4. Step 4

    4. Add one cup of Arm and Hammer Washing soda to the bucket. Stir until well mixed.

  5. Step 5

    5. If you desire to add an essential oil to your laundry soap for fragrance, you would add the oil now after having mixed the other ingredients. Only add a small amount at a time, mixing in between additions, until desired fragrance is reached.

  6. Step 6

    6. Allow mixture to cool, and then place your lid onto your bucket. (The mixture will gel when cooled.)

  7. Step 7

    7. Add 1 cup of laundry soap gel to washer per load. For extremely dirty clothing, add approximately 1 1/2 cups.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that you purchase Arm and Hammer Washing soda, not baking soda. You can find the washing soda in the laundry detergent section of your grocery store, located near products such as Borax.

on 7/5/2009 Lenora, I also have an HE front loader and have used this soap with no difficulties at all. Since there are virtually no suds with this soap, it is safe to use in front loader machines.

on 11/20/2008 We have been using the soap for a week now and it works fantastic. We still have to use bleach on the socks but everything else seems to be really clean. I don't know why more people aren't doing this....
