How to Buy Resistance Bands for Exercise

Using resistance bands is a great alternative to lifting free weights for strength training. Many varieties of bands are available with different skill levels and resistance levels represented. Buy bands based on your skill level and the muscles you want to work on.

  1. Step 1

    Find bands based on their resistance. Bands are color coded based on the level of resistance, but all companies label and color code their bands differently. Read the packaging to make sure you find the right band resistance that you're looking for.

  2. Step 2

    Choose a variety of resistance levels for a complete workout. Beginners should start with lighter resistance bands, but can also use a harder band for to work different muscles.

  3. Step 3

    Pick bands that are comfortable in your hands. Most bands have small, rubber or padded handles, but some are made of plastic or larger. Make sure the band feels comfortable in your hand while you stretch it before buying it.

  4. Step 4

    Look for bands that won't need replacement handles. If you choose a resistance band that has replacement handles available, you may want to buy them right away or you'll be stuck looking for replacements later.

  5. Step 5

    Buy accessories to go with your bands. Select a door attachment that allows you to secure the band to a door for a variety of strength exercises. Opt for ankle cuffs and adjustable handles.

  6. Step 6

    Consider buying a resistance band workout video or book to help you use the bands.

  • If your buying your first resistance bands, look for something simple. There are many complex designs for more advance workouts.
  • Most resistance bands come with instruction. Read the materials and focus on using the bands correctly to prevent injuries.
