Replacing your car's wiper blades can be an intimidating task. For every brand of blade on the market, there are many variations from which to choose. You'll find the winter blade, the all-weather blade, and then within these groupings you'll find numerous sizes. To make it even more confusing, most vehicles have different size blades for the passenger and the driver side of the car.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read your owner's manual for your car. This has everything you need to know about your car, including the correct type and size of wiper blades. Your owner's manual might even list the actual brands and the sizes that will work for your vehicle.

  2. Step 2

Choose the wiper blade type first. If you live in a northern climate and it is close to the winter season, stick with a winter blade. If you are in a milder climate or the threat of snow and ice is still far off, you can go with an all-purpose or all-weather blade.

  3. Step 3

Pick a brand that has the particular type (winter or all-purpose) and determine the size you need. Most stores carry either a maintenance book or an electronic gadget that allows you to input your car make, model and year. With this information, you will find many different brands of blades and the sizes appropriate for your vehicle.

  4. Step 4

Verify that the information you received from the in-store book or reference device is as it is listed in your owner's manual. Consider that the owner's manual is king when you perform any kind of maintenance to your vehicle. The manufacturer is responsible for any warranty or liability claims so long as you follow the owner's manual.

  5. Step 5

Purchase your replacement wiper blades, but do not remove them from the package until you have compared them in the package to your existing blades. Most vehicles and blades have a universal attachment system, and the replacement wiper blades should come with several adaptors. You want to double check to make sure the replacement wiper blades appear compatible with your vehicle before removing them so you can returm them easily if necessary.

  6. Step 6

Install your blades once you determine they are the right type and size for your vehicle. Dispose of your old blades and the packaging for the new blades responsibly.
