Blocking is an important aspect of learning self-defense. Crane style Kung Fu uses the basic blocking technique in a number of ways, some of which are below. It is a good idea to use a mat or other soft floor covering when practicing these techniques.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Face your partner standing about three feet apart with your legs comfortably apart and arms slightly bent at the elbows and the palms facing up. The left leg should be slightly forward and both of your knees are slightly bent.

  2. Step 2

Allow your partner to raise their right knee in an attempted kick before blocking the leg with your raised left knee. The hands and the arms move upwards to protect the chest and face. Palms of the hands are facing in towards your chest.

  3. Step 3

Let your partner attempt a punch to the head using their right arm and block with your left forearm, palm open, by sweeping your left arm across the body before connecting with the punch.

  4. Step 4

Continue to block the right punch with the left arm as you use your right hand to punch low at your partner. In a real self-defense situation, the low punch would connect with the attacker's pelvic region. The left arm is still holding your partner's right arm at the end of step 4.

  5. Step 5

Wrap the right arm around your partner's left arm by moving to their side and approaching from behind. This creates an arm lock. Push down on your partner's arm which will further weaken his position.

  6. Step 6

Extend the block into a throw down position or straighten partner's arm out into a breaking move.
