Things You'll Need:
- 1 lb. brown sugar
- 1 qt. bottle of light corn syrup
- 1 tbsp. maple extract
- ½ cup bacon drippings
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
-
Step 1
Mix the salt, baking powder, shortening and water. Stir in the flour a little at a time until the mixture reaches the consistency of biscuit dough.
-
Step 2
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut it into small squares. Be careful not to handle the dough too much.
-
Step 3
Fry the squares of dough in a deep fat fryer or a kettle of hot fat until the squaw bread is light golden brown.
-
Step 4
Remove the squaw bread from the hot oil and let it drain briefly on a layer of paper towels.
-
Step 5
Provide a dish of hot maple sauce and some warm butter and serve the squaw bread while it's steaming hot.
-
Step 1
Bring the brown sugar and light corn syrup to a boil in a saucepan over medium high heat. The mixture will be thick, but don't dilute it with water.
-
Step 2
Stir in the maple extract and cayenne pepper.
-
Step 3
Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the bacon drippings until the maple syrup sauce is smooth.
-
Step 4
Serve the maple syrup sauce warm with hot squaw bread.
