Wine tasting is a great activity for you and your partner or for you and group of friends. But you may wonder if there are any wine tasting tips you should use when you're visiting the wineries. Luckily, looking like you know what you're doing when tasting wine is easy.

From Quick Guide: Winery Tours
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with the lightest, mildest wines such as whites and work your way up to the ports.

  2. Step 2

Hold the glass up to the light. The color of the wine indicates the age of the wine. Older white wines have more color, whereas older red wines tend to lose color.

  3. Step 3

Swirl the wine in the glass. This releases aromas and helps you to see the legs of the wine. The legs let you see how heavy the wine is.

  4. Step 4

Put your nose completely into the glass and inhale deeply. Try to guess what scents you notice. Once you get good, you may smell vanilla, berries, or even oak.

  5. Step 5

Take a little sip of wine and swish it slightly so the wine hits your entire tongue. Notice how it tastes. Swallow the wine and note the finish of the wine.

  6. Step 6

Swish the wine in the glass again and smell the wine again. Note any differences in the scent of the wine, and there will be some.

  7. Step 7

Drink another small sip or finish off the wine. Note how the wine's flavor has changed again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Comment with your group whether you liked the wine, what scents you noticed and what flavors you tasted.
  • Don't be surprised by the small amounts of wine poured at the wineries. You're tasting the wine, not guzzling it.
