How to Build a Snail Stable

A snail uses its shell as its home. Therefore, snails require only minimum housing accommodations. A pet snail should be indoors for protection from the elements. Building a snail stable is a fun way to change your snail's habitat.

1. Decide on what material you want to use to build the snail stable. Plastic is a good choice if you move your snail a lot because it is light weight, sturdy and easy to move. Glass is good if your snails stay in the same place. Cardboard works well if you are making a temporary snail stable.

2. Measure your snail's habitat to find out the measurements for the dividers. You have to decide how many stables to include in your snail's habitat. Make sure that you leave room for your snail to come out of the stable. A typical snail stable will be about 1/2 the length of the habitat.

3. Decorate and install your snail stable dividers. Cut the dividers using scissors before you decorate them. You can glue the dividers to the habitat by adding a small amount of glue to the bottom and back of the dividers.

4. Add appropriate substrate to your snail stable. This can be compost, bark or peat.

5. Arrange decorations such as rocks, tunnels, food dishes and a water supply.

6. Cover your snail stable. Snails climb so a cover is necessary to keep the snails safe. Remember that your top should have air holes. A mesh or cage top is ideal for a snail stable.

7. Clean your snail stable often. Replace any part of the stable that is damaged or very dirty.
