How to Cope With Homesickness When Missing Someone

Whether you're away at camp or college, on a business trip or in a new city, you're sure to feel even more homesick if you're also missing a friend or family member. Cope with the separation with strategies to help you keep in touch, but keep moving forward with your life at the same time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Exchange email with someone from home on a regular basis, if possible. Keeping up to date on the events, highlights and minute details of your friends and family's lives may help you feel like you're not away at all.

  2. Step 2

Fill your days with fun or fascinating activities to keep your mind off your former home. Carry a book or collection of word puzzles that you can focus on immediately if you're starting to miss someone. Adopt a new hobby to keep you busy at night when you may feel the most melancholy.

  3. Step 3

Make new friends. Although they won't replace the ones you're pining over, you can hang out, have interesting conversations, laugh and capture some of the camaraderie you're missing.

  4. Step 4

Start a journal or write letters that express your feelings of sadness and homesickness. Releasing the emotions can help you cope, while bottling them up can cause them to escalate.

  5. Step 5

Consider the person's personality quirks and annoying habits. There's got to be at least one quality that makes you happy to be away from a special someone for a little while.

Tips & Warnings
  • If talking to someone you miss makes your homesickness worse, tell them you'd like to suspend contact temporarily while you immerse yourself in activities and grow accustomed to your new surroundings.
