Step 1
Learn all you can about Internet and email safety. One of your parents' arguments against an email address might be that it's not safe or suitable for someone your age. If you know the risks and know how to stay safe, you will be more likely to convince them that you can handle it.
-
Step 2
Let your parents choose your email address and what provider you use. Remember that your email address should not give any hint to your actual name, your age or where you live.
-
Step 3
Give your parents a list of rules that you are willing to follow if they let you have your own email address. You might even have to agree to give them the password so that they can monitor your email account.
-
Step 4
Tell your parents about the benefits of having an email account. You can get help from friends with homework. You can also use email to communicate with your friends without tying up the phone line, unless you have a dial up Internet connection.
-
Step 5
Remain calm and mature throughout the conversation. In order to talk your parents into letting you get an email address you need to prove to them that you are mature enough to handle the responsibility.
