The bouffant hairstyle was all the rage in the early 1960s. Popularized in large part by Jackie Kennedy, it was considered to be an elegant and glamorous special-occasion hairdo. For many women, a bigger bouffant was better. Today's newer mini-bouffants, while still elegant, are more understated and subdued.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Brush
  • Hair clip
  • Comb
  • Spray bottle of water
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair spray
  1. Step 1

Wash the hair the day before you plan to style it, and apply a good conditioner. Freshly-washed hair, although shiny and lovely, is difficult to work with.

  2. Step 2

Brush the hair and then comb it to make sure all snarls and tangles are removed. Mist the hair lightly with water before you begin styling.

  3. Step 3

Use the comb to divide a small section of hair at the crown of the head. Clip the section loosely to keep it out of the way.

  4. Step 4

Gather the unclipped hair and put it in a ponytail. A mini-bouffant is applied primarily to the crown of the head only and the back is unaffected. If you don't want a ponytail, you can let the hair hang free.

  5. Step 5

Remove the clip from the sectioned hair at the crown of the head and create a bouffant by dividing the hair in small sections and pushing it over the finger. Back comb each section very lightly, then place your palm over the back part of the hair and push it forward to give it height. Continue until the entire crown of the head is completed and if necessary support each side of the bouffant with bobby pins.

  6. Step 6

Mist the hair lightly with hair spray to keep the bouffant in place.
