Style is very important in society today and the image we present to the world speaks for us. If you are considered punk because of your dark hair and clothing, your rock music preference and your harsh attitude, yet you would like to be a bit more preppy, there are a few things you can do today to begin changing your personal style.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make subtle changes to your attitude. While the punk style emanates a hard personality, preppy is a bit more upbeat. Try to smile more, be sociable and friendly and laugh often. You don't have to overdo the personality change, as you don't want to come off as fake; however, shake the serious and rough attitude you have adopted with your punk style.

  2. Step 2

Wear more color. You don't have to throw away all of your black punk clothing, but in order to be preppy you will have to avoid the all black outfits fitted with studs and chains. Go for a softer look, mixing black jeans with a bright colored t-shirt and a nice, clean pair of shoes. While rips, tears and tattered clothing and shoes work well with punk, in order to go preppy, you'll have to keep your look clean.

  3. Step 3

Select fabrics which emanate the preppy style. You may be accustomed to the black leather, jeans and sweatshirts of your punk style; however, if you want to go preppy you must choose soft suede, corduroy and cotton slacks. If you would like to add patterns to your wardrobe, keep them classic, such as plaids, paisleys and soft flower patterns. Don't go overboard with patterns however, and when in doubt keep the fabric as plain as possible.

  4. Step 4

Tone down the makeup and jewelry if you are a girl. The thick, dark makeup you've adopted as punk will have to be replaced with softer earth tones that compliment your skin tone. Also, instead of large studded earrings and body piercing, try light and simple jewelry that compliments your new clean style.

  5. Step 5

Choose a clean-cut hairstyle as well and sport your natural color instead of dramatic dye-jobs. Preppy is all about natural, so avoid dye and keep your hair clean and trimmed neatly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't try to make dramatic style changes overnight or you will be quickly pegged as a poser. Slowly let your natural hair color grow out, gradually add color and in a few months you will have subtly gone from punk to preppy.
