How to Get Involved in Community Service

Volunteering for a worthwhile cause is one of the most rewarding things we can do with our lives. It takes little effort to get involved in community service and the rewards far outweigh the effort. 1. Pick a community service area to volunteer that you are interested in or care deeply about. Think about what your interests are. Perhaps you would like to work with children or are compassionate to the needs of the elderly or animals.

2. Contact a hospital volunteer program if you want to help those having problems due to serious illness. Other options related to health care are nursing homes and senior assisted living areas. Many of these people just need someone to talk to, have someone read to them or share a meal with them. Children's hospitals need people to help read to children and do crafts. There are also community service needs to help those and their families going through the final months of their lives.

3. Talk to your minister, priest or rabbi about needs in your church or temple community. There are always those in need that the church communities know about. Your church may have a food pantry that needs someone to help with collections or getting the foods to those in need. Some churches sponsor clothing and coat collections for those in need as well. You may even be able to organize a food drive, clothing or coat drive to benefit your church or community.

4. Call your local school district to see if there are volunteers needed for community service work within the schools in your area. Schools sometimes need volunteers to read to children that have special needs or vision problems. There are many other options within schools for community service if you enjoy working with children. Think about putting together a used book sale to benefit the children of your community so they can have new books.

5. Visit your community's animal shelter to what volunteer needs are there. They may need dog walkers, individuals to help with pet adoptions or pet foster programs. You might just make a list of their supply needs and start a community campaign to donate the items or money for the items. Helping animals in your area would be great community service.

6. Have fun while doing community service. Get involved in organizations in your community such as Rotary Clubs, Women Leagues, Junior Women's Guilds, museum committees and even the zoo. These organizations do regular community service events to benefit their communities and have fun while they're doing it. So join the fun and meet other people that want to get involved.

7. Enlist the participation of your co-workers to get involved in community service. Adopt a child or family for Christmas to help a needy family. Get a group of co-workers together to do work on the home of elderly person in your area. Yes, it's work, but it's so rewarding and fun if you do it together.
