Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Metal key rings
  • Jute, ribbon or leather cording
  • Pony beads
  • Shaped beads
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Clear glaze (if desired)
  • Stickers
  • Self-adhesive gems
  1. Step 1

Cut a piece of ribbon, jute or cording twice as long as you'd like the keychain to be. Ensure the string is durable and won't fray and break over time.

  2. Step 2

Pull the cording through the middle of the key ring until the ends are even, then knot it twice to secure it.

  3. Step 3

Use the two dangling lengths of cording to string the pony beads. Knot each end after adding beads or add knots after you've added each bead. While individual knots make the accents more secure, you'll need to cut a longer piece of cording in the beginning to produce the desired length.

  4. Step 4

Personalize the look by adding a few shaped beads like flowers, circles, hearts or sports balls. Use alphabet beads to create monograms, spell names or pay tribute to favorite hobbies or bands.

  5. Step 5

Customize individual pony beads with different colors of paint. Create letters, designs or small shapes with a fine-tipped brush. If desired, coat painted pieces with clear glaze to prevent the motifs from flaking or scratching off.

  6. Step 6

Let younger children change the look of their keychains by applying tiny stickers. They can add glamor by applying self-adhesive gems and rhinestones to the beads.

  7. Step 7

Add even more interest by clipping miniature stuffed animals, additional keychains, charms or baubles to the key ring.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the crafting session to reinforce educational concepts. Practice sorting, naming colors, counting and adding while working with the beads.
  • Don't allow toddlers to work with beads since the small objects pose a choking hazard.
