College is an exciting and stressful time in one's life. Moving out and living in a college dorm can also be very exciting and stressful. When moving into a dorm, one must consider how they would want to decorate it. There are several things to consider when decorating a dorm room.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk to your roommate. Find out information about their likes and dislikes. You will be living together, so it is best to agree on color schemes, room themes and atmosphere.

  2. Step 2

Shop on a budget. Choose the decorations for your dorm at cheaper stores such as Target, Wal-Mart or the thrift store. Most college students will not have a lot of money, so shopping on a budget for room decorations is essential.

  3. Step 3

Choose a comforter and sheets for the bed. The bed will probably be the largest piece of furniture in the dorm room. In addition, it will be the most used. It will be used for sleeping, studying, as a table or as a seat for others. Therefore, you should choose a comforter and sheets that reflect your likes and style. You may also want to consider dark colors so that it does not show dirt.

  4. Step 4

Purchase storage items such as under the bed boxes, crates, closet organizers or plastic hooks. Purchase them to reflect your style.

  5. Step 5

Check the rules about hanging things on the wall. If it is OK, then you can hang posters, pictures, cork boards and more. You may want to consider painting the walls if your school permits it. Other ideas for the wall include a laundry line, dry erase boards, magnets, shelves and lights.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add a few plants to the room.
  • Do not bring small animals to your dorm unless it is OK with your roommate and school rules and policies.
