How to Check Into a Hotel

Save

Getting checked into a hotel is an easy task that requires you to give proper identification, a form of payment and some personal information to the hotel staff checking you in. Communicate your needs, preferences and budget will ensure that your stay is pleasant and comfortable during your time away from home.

  • Greet the front desk person and communicate that you'd like a room. If you've already made a reservation, make sure you tell them the name the reservation was under. Go to Step 2 if you haven't already made a reservation. Otherwise, move on to Step 3.

  • Specify how many rooms you need, how many people are in your party, what size beds you need and if you prefer smoking or non-smoking rooms. If you'd like a suite or other amenities, be sure to communicate this up front.

  • Tell the hotel staff how long you intend to stay. If there's some uncertainty about the length of your stay, inform the hotel of this so they can decide how to enter your room request into their system.

  • Request any special services like help with your luggage, wake-up calls, room service. Find out where the pool and work out room are located. Sign the register, if there is one.

  • Pay for your room if you're paying cash. Or give your credit card for an imprint if you're paying by credit.

  • Grab your keys and head up to your room. Enjoy your stay.

Tips & Warnings

  • See if you can bargain down the price if you find it too far out of your price range. Acting like you're about to leave and check out the hotel across the street may help bring the price down. Remember you're always in the better position unless the hotel is totally booked. They need your business.
