Keep safety a priority. Even though decals change the look of your motorcycle, pick placement of them with safety in mind. Put the biggest surface area in the most visible places, such as the side of the tank, the front and rear fender or fairing and, most importantly, your helmet.

Go with a whole decal kit, especially if you are concerned about looks and safety. Decal kits are available through many motorcycle accessory outfits and tie the look together nicely. Some kits even have matching decals for your helmet as well. Check out StreetGlo reflective motorcycle products for starters.

Be sure the decals you choose come with application tape. This makes applying the graphics on your motorcycle much easier. Also choose a wide reflective area. The greater the reflective angle, the better other drivers will be able to see you.

Clean all decal areas thoroughly. Clean your hands as well, since any oil and even flakes of skin will decrease the adherence of the decals. Any debris under the decal will cause it to blister. Even if your surface looks clean, clean it again to get rid of any dust.

Dry the area thoroughly where you will adhere the graphics. Do a test fit with the backing still attached to the decal to check for proper placement.

Apply the decal gradually. Take your time and follow the manufacturer's directions as to whether you need to apply the decal wet or dry.

Install a decal to rounded surfaces with extra care. A decal is flat and tends to remain that way. To install it on a rounded surface, keep the area small, less than 9 inches is best.
