Install a text editor application to your computer. Copy text from whatever program you're using and paste it into the text editor. If your text editor is part of your word processing program, you do not need to copy and paste; you can convert your text to an outline format within the program.

List the main ideas of your subject matter for the main category level. Create sub-categories that support and explain your main ideas, as well.

    • 3

Choose the "outline" function of your text editor to reorganize your text. Set up sub-categories with numbers and letters. Begin with Roman numerals for the main categories. Alphabetic letters show the next level of detail. Apply regular numbers to indicate the next level of explanation.

Point your mouse cursor at the beginning of the line. Drag the text to where you want it and release it by letting go of the mouse. You can also use your text editor's specific command keys to move text.

    • 5

Reorganize and change specific category or sub-category levels without numbers or letters, if desired. Many programs allow you to convert information into specific levels by simply tabbing over from the beginning point of your text.

Use the "Undo" command to fix mistakes in your outline. This function only works right after you make a change, since it deletes the last action you made.
