How to Dress Like a CEO

How to Dress Like a CEO. In business, you often have to dress the part before you get the part. While a bigger salary means more money for a better wardrobe, if you want to land the CEO job, sometimes you need to invest in the clothes that make you look like a CEO. And in most organizations, the CEO has an air about him that says, "I am the boss."

  • Make a great first impression when you first meet with top management by wearing your best suit. Make sure it is freshly cleaned and modern. You don't want to wear the shiny blue suit you wore in college to an interview or meeting with men in new black suits.

  • Invest in a good shirt. For men who may not have a large suit collection, a new shirt can spiff up the outfit and put you in the class with any CEO. A conservative tie can also make a serious statement that you are the man for the job.

  • Keep your jewelry low in quantity and high in quality. This rule goes for both men and women interested in a CEO look. The CEOs with the biggest salary are always understated in their accessories. Invest in an expensive watch and a good ring. Women should wear diamonds or pearls in their ears as well.

  • Change shoes if necessary and keep your current shoes cleaned and polished. If you cannot afford to get a shoeshine every day, do it yourself at home before you leave. Women, check out the backs of your heels to see if they are worn out. If you polish your shoes daily, you'll catch the wearing on the leather.

  • Kick it up a notch. If your company culture leans toward more casual dress, even among top management, then make sure your pants and shirts are top of the line designer cuts. While you don't want to show off and look out of place in a group, you want the leadership look to be subtle, yet noticeable.
