How to Edge Up a Person's Hair

An edge up is mainly used by African American man to straighten out the hairline, sideburns and nape of the neck to keep a style fresh. With a steady hand and attention to detail edging up another person's hair is a simple process.

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Sit the person getting edge up in chair that places them slightly lower than chest level to you. Choose a room with enough light to clearly view their hairline. Keep a mirror nearby to check your work while you do the edge up.
Step2
Apply shaving solution to the hair and allow to dry, wipe the clipper edge with shaving solution as well.
Step3
Hold your clippers in the leading hand and comb in the other hand. Start at the temple and comb the hair at the hairline following the direction of hair growth. Use the clippers to trim off any hair that hangs over or sticks out.
Step4
Work around the hairline to the other temple, leaving the forehead for last. Pay special attention to the hairline behind the ears. Glance at the hairline in the mirror as you work to make sure lines are straight.
Step5
Shape up the sideburns following the direction of hair growth, being careful to keep the hair even.
Step6
Come around to the back of the head, clip off any excess hair from the hairline. Round off the edges at the back of the neck.
Step7
Move the clippers up from the neck collar to the back of the hairline to clean the back of the neck.
