1
Remain alert all the time. Be aware of your environment and who is around you. Assess the situation before getting on the subway car, bus or into the taxi. If anything makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, do not get on, wait for the next one to come along.
-
2
Protect yourself from pickpockets when in a crowd. Do not put your wallet in your hip or coat pocket. Carry a handbag that you can grip tightly rather than a bag that hangs loosely over your shoulder. Put you wallet and your cash in a safe, secure pocket.
-
-
3
Leave expensive, flashy jewelry at home. Do not wear clothing or accessories that make you appear affluent.
-
4
Vary your schedule if you use public transportation daily, such as to and from work. Try not to take the same bus or subway everyday at the same time.
-
5
Travel only in licensed, marked taxicabs. Make sure that the photo on the license displayed in the cab matches the driver. Sit in the back seat behind the driver where you can see him but he can not see you. Pay the driver when you get to your destination and before getting out of the cab.
-
6
Get a copy of the bus or subway schedule in advance so you can time your travel accordingly. Arrive shortly before the bus or train arrives so you do not have to wait around in the terminal too long.

When traveling by bus or train, I wear my Farmer John overalls and carry my crappy bag. If I decide to take a nap, I wrap the straps around my arms, but only after I very discretely set the rat trap I keep in there for pickpockets. I actually caught one once....The other people were enraged that the woman would try to rob someone who uses a wheelchair. They actually beat her quite brutally while evicting her from the bus. Later, one of the men took up a collection for me to be able to take an airplane back home, since he wasn't sure if the next crowd would be as dilligent in protecting me. They also -
