Step 1
Wear the proper welding safety gear. This is extremely important for the safety of your clothing, face and especially eyes. Protective gear should include welding hood, welding apron, fire proof gloves, safety glasses and fire proof work boots.
-
Step 2
Consider the drag technique for MIG welding. This technique is done by first placing the shield on your eyes and setting up the weld gun for the appropriate metal and conditions you are welding in. Pull the trigger on the weld gun and drag the gun backwards, depositing the metal onto the work piece.
-
Step 3
Know how to use the push technique. This is done with the same safety equipment in place. Set the weld gun to the appropriate settings, pull the trigger and hold the gun at an angle where you can push the metal with the tip of the gun, onto the work piece. This takes a little practice, but if done correctly, can give a smooth weld.
-
Step 4
Use the modified push technique, also known as the push and pull technique of MIG welding. Pull the trigger on the welding gun and hold it straight up and down, but allow the metal to lay down at an angle. This will form a puddle. You need to always be able to see the puddle as you apply the metal to the work piece. You can modify any of these techniques to work the best for you, keeping in mind quality and safety are the most important things while welding.
