Balancing on waterskis is best practiced on land from a squatting position to a standing position. Keep your legs relaxed and the upper torso in a strong, firm position. Once the movement is comfortable on land, practice the same technique behind the boat.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skis
  • Boat capable of pulling a skier
  • Ski rope
  • Ski gloves (optional)
  • Life jacket made for water sports
  1. Step 1

Select a place on land to practice balancing on the skis. Request the help of a friend to practice balancing with a ski rope if desired.

  2. Step 2

Place both feet in the water skis. Wet the bindings and feet with water to ease feet into the skis.

  3. Step 3

Start in a squatting position. Keep the legs relaxed and the upper torso strong. Slowly stand up and practice keeping your balance evenly distributed over both skis. Move to the water once you are comfortable practicing on dry land.

  4. Step 4

Get into the water and strap both skis on your feet. Hold the ski rope with both hands and signal the driver to hit it when the rope tightens up. Maintain the skis in an upright position with both knees bent.

  5. Step 5

Allow the boat to pull you out of the water. Keep your body in the "skier's position" with your weight evenly distributed on both skis, knees slightly bent and elbows slightly bent. This position will help you maintain balance.

  6. Step 6

Avoid leaning forward with the upper body hunched over the knees. This will cause a fall.

  7. Step 7

Do not pull on the rope and bend the elbows inward. This will pull the skis forward and cause loss of balance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice waterskiing in calm water. Rough water is harder to balance in.
