Step 1
Know the basic chords, notes and techniques of double bass playing. This should be something you are already familiar with before you start adding more complex techniques to your playing.
-
Step 2
Hold the double bass in the correct position. This should be with your left hand wrapped around the back of the neck, with your fingers on the strings. Your right hand is then free for strumming, slaps and other techniques that can be done on the entire surface of the bass as well as the strings.
-
Step 3
Learn the single and double slap first. The single slap is done with the strumming of the strings with your left hand, then slapping the strings down and quiet with your right hand. This can be done at different places along the bass to acquire a different sound. The double slap is the same move with two slaps instead of one, in different positions on the bass.
-
Step 4
Practice the triple slap, then speed it up. The triple slap is just as it sounds--three slaps done like the single and double slap, through different areas on the strings. Once you have this technique down, practice it faster and faster until you have a smooth, rapid triple slap.
