The double bass is the largest string instrument in the violin group. Orchestras and string ensembles depend on the double bass to provide the low end of the musical range. When played as a solo instrument, as in jazz and rockabilly, the triple slap boogie woogie is a distinctive technique for playing the double bass.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start playing the triple slap boogie woogie by hitting a single note and rhythmically slap the neck of the bass twice. The triple slap needs to be practiced one note at a time to get the proper feel for the motion required.

  2. Step 2

Use a circular pattern for playing the bass. This gives the player more flexibility in developing an individual playing style. The circular pattern also makes it easier to play the slap bass techniques.

  3. Step 3

Go back and forth between notes. Work the triple slap into a string of notes. Putting the triple slap into the musical sequence requires practice at each stage, as the player adds notes and develops a feel for the triple slap.

  4. Step 4

Play the notes on the first beat. Each note should be played on the one. The notes come first and the slap, double and triple slap come afterwards.
