Step 1
Start in the basic dancing position, facing your partner with your right hand on her waist as she holds your upper arm. Hold her right hand loosely in your left hand, lifting your hands up together to about her eye level.
-
Step 2
Begin the basic merengue step with your feet together. Take one small step to the left on the first count and then bring your right foot in to touch your left foot on the second count. On the third count, step out again with your left foot and on the forth count, bring your right foot, again, to your left. On the fourth count, do not set your foot down completely, rather simply tap your toe.
-
Step 3
Repeat these simple dance steps moving to the left, beginning with your right foot. Continue the merengue men's footwork, moving left, then right, then left again. As you complete the basic footwork, you will lead your dance partner while she mirrors your movements.
-
Step 4
Move your hips dramatically as you take your steps, swinging them in and out to accentuate this Latin style. Practice your dance moves slowly at first to perfect the merengue dance movements as much as possible. Only once the steps become second nature should you begin to practice to the full speed of the music.
