Tango dancing, a South American dance style, continues to gain popularity in the United States as a sleek and sexy form of ballroom dancing. The fan, an American tango move dancers derived from the original "ocho" move, is a basic step consisting of a set of swivels or crosses and pivots of the feet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice basic tango steps--the slow, slow, quick-quick, slow movement--before adding the fan into your routine. Stand with a partner in open or closed position, depending on which step you just finished, keeping your knees loose and your body aligned.

  2. Step 2

Women begin the fan by sliding your right foot over your left, crossing legs. As you cross your right foot over left, pivot on the ball of your left foot, turning slightly.

  3. Step 3

Pivot--or swivel--on the balls of your feet as you bring your left foot over your right, crossing again.

  4. Step 4

Continue the cross and pivot, making an X or 8 on the floor. Vary the counts in this move, using it to be very quick or very slow depending on what the music and situation calls for in your routine.

  5. Step 5

Be precise and fluid, keeping a hold of your partner for support. You should feel as though you're gliding quickly along the floor, moving your hips and shoulders with your feet and legs to finish the step.

  6. Step 6

Repeat, practicing going in and out of fans. Use swiveling moves to avoid running into another couple or to add interest and personality to your routine.
