How to Take Apart a Moped Carburetor

If your moped engine doesn't run or is puffing and barking, chances are that the carburetor is dirty. The carburetor works by regulating the amount of air that flows through it. When it's dirty, the air doesn't flow right and the engine stops working. Taking apart a moped carburetor to clean it out is not as hard as you'd think.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver
• Needle-nose pliers

Instructions

1. Find the carburetor near the throttle cable. Remove the screws at the top of the carburetor and then take off the choke slide. The choke slide is a flat piece of metal that you'll find attached to a rod coming out of the top of the carburetor.

2. Push up on the spring that is holding the main slide to the throttle cable. The carburetor won't come off while they are attached. Push on the spring so that the throttle cable slides right off. The spring can then be removed, followed by the top of the carburetor. The body of the carburetor can be taken out now.

3. Remove the float ball. It is down at the bottom of the carburetor. With a socket wrench, twist it off. The float is sitting in the bottom casing of the carburetor that forms a bowl.

4. Take needle nose pliers to grip the float by a small pin in its center. Set the float aside.

5. Look for the little brass fitting that has two small slots. That is the carburetor jet. Push the screwdriver into one of the slots and unscrew the jet out. The carburetor is taken apart and ready to be cleaned.
