Tai Chi Chuan is an internal martial art, and people worldwide practice this form of exercise. Its slow movements make it an excellent exercise and training choice for anyone who has difficulty with the percussion martial arts, such as karate and taekwondo. Tai Chi Chuan emphasizes breathing, balance and flexibility. It's also an excellent form of mental conditioning.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand up straight and tall. Your feet should be heavy as though you are sinking into the earth, and the crown of your head should be reaching up. You want your posture tall and straight, but you should also be relaxed.

  2. Step 2

Lift and stretch your hands out in front of you as though you are reaching for someone. Your palms will be facing toward your body as you raise them.

  3. Step 3

Turn your hands over, palms down, as they reach shoulder height.

  4. Step 4

Bring your elbows down, and let your open hands follow until they have reached your thighs.

  5. Step 5

Keep your breathing even and slow throughout the Tai Chi Chuan movements.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't let your shoulders come up as you move your arms up.
  • Consolidate the changes in your arm and hand positions into one continuous move.
