West coast swing dance is a partner style dance that has taken influence from Lindy Hop, an African-American dance which originated in New York in the 1920s. West coast swing is famous for its movements, which have an "elastic" quality, allowing dance partners to improvise on the dance floor. In just a few simple steps, you can add the sugar push to your ladies West coast swing routine.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your feet together and your weight rested on your left leg. Your right knee should slightly bent and your right hand gently placed in the palm of your partner. Wait to begin the step until he begins to pull you towards him, allowing him to lead.

  2. Step 2

Take two steps forward, beginning with your right foot. On the third step, bring your right foot to your left, tapping in while turning your right hip out. Step back on the fourth beat with your right foot and on the fifth beat draw your left foot back to your left and tap on the sixth while turning your left hip out.

  3. Step 3

Keep your movements as smooth and sensual as possible, trying not to bounce up and down at all during the sugar push, or any other West coast swing movements. Use your free hand to add character to your moves, lifting it slightly and moving to the beat. As you become more comfortable in the move, you can add your own personal touches and improvisations.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the ladies sugar push movement as many times as you like, using it as a basic dance step and transition to other more complicated movement.
