Step 1
Take a stance for a straddle putt by spreading your legs perhaps 6 to 12 inches wider than shoulder width. Balance your weight equally between both feet. As opposed to in-line putting, neither foot is in front of the other.
-
Step 2
Use the straddle stance when making an uphill shot because it allows you to lean into the hill's angle. It's best to use a backhanded flip rather than a forehand with a straddle putt. That way, you do not have to cross your body with your throwing motion.
-
Step 3
Increase the stability of a shot by using the straddle putt if you are blocked from direct access to the basket and need to lean around an object.
-
Step 4
Lean forward as the toss is executed. The stance allows increased stability. This allows for further arm extension, promoting increased accuracy.
-
Step 5
Substitute a straddle putt instead of a jump putt if possible. For most players it's more accurate.
-
Step 6
Change to in-line putting for downhill putts instead of straddle putting. It's a more stable shot from a downhill lie.
