Step 1
Choose a massage oil if you like. You can use special massage oils or just baby oil. Use a small amount or you won't have enough control during your massage. Place the unclothed person to be massaged on a flat surface on their stomach.
-
Step 2
Stand on the same side of the shoulder you're massaging. Then cup your right or left hand and press your knuckles against the inner edge of their right or left scapula. The scapula is the triangular bone on the back of each shoulder.
-
Step 3
Put slight pressure on scapula and slide both knuckles across the scapula toward the arm to relax the muscles. Repeat several times.
-
Step 4
Place your forearm just inside the scapula with your hand pointing toward the lower back, and apply pressure compressing toward the spine. Repeat several times working your way down toward the middle back.
-
Step 5
Apply more pressure with your elbow and pull it up along the spine and across and out the shoulder blade. Slide your forearm slowly back down the path it came up the spine and repeat back and forth several times if necessary.
-
Step 6
Use your forearm as you did your knuckles, applying pressure and sliding it from inside the scapula and out toward the arm. Repeat several times along different areas of the scapula.
-
Step 7
Scoop your forearm, with your hand pointing toward the lower back, along the area from the neck across the shoulder blade to the shoulder joint. Do more compressions with your forearm along the upper spine down to the middle of the back, applying more pressure as you go. You can switch arms and do compressions along the spine of the lower back also.
