How to Do Soccer Volley Techniques

The volley is an advanced soccer technique. There are three volley techniques, and they all require the player to take the ball out of the air before it hits the ground. This challenges the player's coordination and balance, as well as her timing. The three main types of volleys are the shot, the pass and the clearance. The first two occur in offensive play, while the last occurs in defensive play.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand on the balls of your feet and prepare to receive the ball. Standing flat-footed makes it hard for you to stay on balance during the volley and increases your reaction time.

  2. Step 2

Strike a volley shot by winding your leg up and then powerfully driving through the soccer ball with the instep of your foot. Hit the ball with your shoelaces to maximize your power.

  3. Step 3

Pass the ball with a volley by using the same technique you did on the shot, but without as much power. A passed volley will arc more than a shot and should land comfortably for a striker or forward to receive.

  4. Step 4

Clear the ball by firing your volley up and out of the defensive backfield. The ball's path is similar to that of the lofted pass, but should have as much power behind it as you can muster to keep it away from your opponents.

  5. Step 5

Finish each of these shots with a full follow through to ensure proper control and consistency. Try to make your swing as clean and balanced as possible to increase your volley's reliability.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring your body up and over the ball as you strike it. Cork and then uncork your shoulders to get more power out of the shot.
