How to Do One-Touch Passing Drills in Soccer

Learning to pass the ball is one of the most important skills in soccer, and the one-touch pass can set up shots on goal and teach players how to get around defenders.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Split the team into pairs and give each pair a ball.

  2. Step 2

    Place one player from each pair about five yards from the other and give one player the ball.

  3. Step 3

    Kick the ball to the player five yards away.

  4. Step 4

    Return the ball to its original passer by tapping the ball with the inside of the foot, reversing the momentum and direction of the ball.

  5. Step 5

    Kick the ball back without stopping it and continue these steps to create a rhythm with your partner until your coach tells you to stop.

Tips & Warnings
  • Players should use the side of their foot for this drill, not the top or instep.
  • Players should be on their toes in preparation to receive the ball. The point of the drill is to move the ball quickly between the two players.
  • The toe of the non-kicking foot, or plant foot, should point in the direction you want the ball to go.
  • As players become more advanced, move them back in five-yard increments. After that is mastered, try one-touch passing while players are jogging side by side down the field.
  • Players should have their arms out for balance until they become comfortable with the drill.
